MLK Day Celebration

AmeriCorps staff members Stephanie Echeverry and Jennilyn Fore facilitated a celebration for MLK Day with local AdventureServe youth participants! We hosted a small social distance watch party of the live stream program of the West Jessamine School's Care Council to celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. We had an awesome time reflecting on MLK and discussing the influence he has had on society. We had 6 kids participate in our celebration which began with the live-streamed program. After the program was over, we facilitated a discussion with the kids covering the points in the program and how it applied to their own lives. We gave the kids handout worksheets to process some things about MLK and his impact. This was a really cool opportunity to engage with our local kids and create a space for them to learn about the significance of MLK and process the issues of racism and discrimination that still exist in our society today. Each of the kids seemed to have meaningful takeaways from the event and I think we were all blessed by the ability to value MLK Day in fellowship with each other.
“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there "is" such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” -MLK
